I like to use the analogy of the kitchen cupboard when talking to clients about talent themes and how they use them.  Clients often get a little hung up about the order of their themes or that one is so much lower for them and they don’t know why i.e. Strategic – ‘I see options and plan ahead, I ask what if?’  when I ask them what themes they do have in their top 10 or 15 that they use, often they will pull out 2 or 3 that when put together can achieve the same outcome.  That is the beauty of strengths.  We also think about the dynamics and what might soften or enhance another theme.  If I can making a curry and add chilli and paprika its going to spice it up, if I add coconut milk it might soften it.

Another analogy might be the theme that is in the middle, a supporting theme.  I might describe it like the can opener in the kitchen draw.  You know where it is, you know how to use it and you grab it when needed.  Our supporting themes might be like that.
